Description
Jingdezhen Hand-Painted Bamboo Gaiwan (160ml / 5.4 oz)
This one-of-a-kind gaiwan captures the elegance of traditional Chinese art. Hand-thrown and hand-painted in Jingdezhen, it features a serene bamboo motif and classic calligraphy. The two-piece design includes a perfectly fitted bowl and a domed lid, engineered to sit seamlessly within the rim while brewing.
Artistic Details & Calligraphy
The design is painted in a freehand, expressive style (Xieyi), prioritizing movement and the natural flow of the brush over precise outlines.
- The Bamboo: The bamboo stalks are painted with broad strokes, with nodes added while the glaze is still wet. The leaves are grouped and swept quickly, creating sharp tips. Where the pigment pools, the blue is deep; where the brush carries more water, it fades beautifully under the glaze, blending the leaves together.
- The Calligraphy: The opposite side leaves ample white space, featuring the four Chinese characters “竹报平安” (Zhu Bao Ping An – “Bamboo brings peace”). Written in running script from right to left, the characters vary in size and flow seamlessly, capturing a single breath of creativity.
- Lid & Interior: The domed lid continues the bamboo motif, topped with a round knob for easy handling. The interior of the bowl is mostly left blank to highlight the tea liquor, with a traditional blue mark on the bottom.
